Denise Pitzman graduated from Kansas University with a bachelor of science degree in journalism. After serving in the Army as a medic and completing officer training she moved to Alaska where she owned and operated a sport fishing and adventure tourism lodge. Ms. Pitzman also worked as a reporter for the Homer News, and wrote the Anchor Point feature article. She currently works for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. She has been an advocate for children who need early intervention and served on the board of Birth 2 Three in Homer, Alaska. She also held the position of vice president of the Chamber of Commerce in Anchor Point and currently sits on the Site Council for Homer High School.



Ms. Pitzman became involved with the Children's Tumor Foundation in 2001 when her son, Leo, was diagnosed with NF1. Shortly after, she founded the Alaska Chapter of the Children's Tumor Foundation and began fundraising mainly through her participation in the NF Endurance Team. Ms. Pitzman has completed eleven marathons for the Foundation and sits on the Advisory Board for the Endurance Team. She now encourages her son to advocate for his own future through youth running events, including the K-Bay 5K Run for Leo. Ms. Pitzman is currently president of the Chapter and Affiliate Council and helps to organize the annual meeting of Chapter and Affiliate representatives from around the country. She joined the board in 2009 as the CAC president and serves on the board's Volunteer Relations Committee.

Ms. Pitzman lives in Homer, Alaska with her three children, Leo, Sophie and Corinne.
