Rachel B. Tiven New York, New York
Rachel B. Tiven is the Executive Director of Immigration Equality, a national non-profit organization fighting for equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive immigrants and their families, and winning asylum in the U.S. for those fleeing persecution due to sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. Under her leadership, Immigration Equality has tripled its staff and budget, quadrupled client services, created the Immigration Equality Action Fund, its lobbying arm, and opened an office in Washington, D.C. Ms. Tiven
frequently appears in the media, including on the Bill O’Reilly show, and is regularly quoted in the New York Times, the Advocate, and newspapers and blogs around the country.
Ms. Tiven is a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School, where she was an editor of the Columbia Journal of Gender and Law. As an attorney, she has represented immigrant clients at the Legal Aid Society of New York and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Barbara S. Jones in the Southern District of New York. Before becoming a lawyer, she was a reporter and television producer for Bloomberg Business News, and a member of Lambda Legal's media team.
Ms. Tiven, a member of the Children’s Tumor Foundation board since 2010, is delighted to help the organization grow and achieve lasting results. She has first-hand familiarity with the impact of NF1 through family experiences. Before joining the Foundation, Ms. Tiven was actively involved in the New Israel Fund, which builds social justice and democratic infrastructure in Israel. For seven years, she volunteered weekly at God’s Love We Deliver, a hot meal delivery service for homebound people with AIDS and other serious illnesses.
Ms. Tiven, and her partner Sally Gottesman, live in New York City and are the parents of two young children.
