“What Texas NF has done is really groundbreaking,” said John Risner, president of the Children’s Tumor Foundation. “Collaboration among similarly focused medical research foundations is the surest way to maximize the impact of our work. More organizations throughout the nonprofit landscape will surely follow Texas NF’s lead and we applaud their initiative.” The partnership will fund a two year research project conducted by Dr. Jody Fromm, Ph.D., at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital on malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) in individuals affected by NF. MPNSTs are a form of cancer that occurs on connective tissue throughout the body. MPNSTs affect 5-15% of individuals affected by NF at some point in their lives. The tumors are often inoperable, and progress rapidly. “There have been promising early results from the approach that Dr. Fromm and her colleagues are studying” said Kim Peters, president of Texas Neurofibromatosis Foundation. “We recognized the potential their research has for bettering the lives of individuals in Texas and throughout the world living with NF and committed to partnering with the Children’s Tumor Foundation on this research project. We are very excited about the possibilities.” Started in 1980, Texas NF is committed to meeting the needs of people challenged with NF by providing care, comfort, support, information, education, funding, and other resources for its treatment, prevention, and cure. The Children's Tumor Foundation is excited to engage in this partnership and looks forward to future collaboration with this respected organization. |
