NF1 and Tattoos

Postby Egorianna » Thu Jul 31, 2008 2:11 pm

I was wondering if there is anyone out there who has a tattoo(s) who also has NF 1?

I spoke to my doctor and she said I could, as long as that area is clear. Of course she strongly suggested that I don't get one, but was focusing more so on the ink/dyes entering the body, and it being permanent, etc. The thing is, the spot I want to place it (upper shoulder) has a couple small ones which aren't painful or sensitive at all.

I'm wondering if I should work the design around them or would it be a BAD idea to just go over them?

Since I was 16 I've always wanted one, and yes I have thought a long time about getting one. I've finally come up with one I really feel good about getting.(I'm 30something now) LOL

Thanks for any feedback :)

I strongly recommend against getting a tatoo. I know there is disagreement on the subject, but I have observed a relationship between trauma and the development of nf's, at least in my case. A tatoo obviously traumatizes the dermis.

I have NF1 and I have two tattoo's. One around my ankle and one on my stomach. The areas were clear, and I haven't had any problems.

Im getting my second one done on Tuesday, and there is a couple there, but I feel it will add character to the tattoo since its going to be a hammer head shark. Tribel kind. one of the bumps will become the eye.. hehehe. Hey, if its gonna make me look wierd, why not add something to it?

My husband has NF1 and has two tattoos. One on his shoulder and one on his leg.
He has had no problems at all, at this point.

I dont have NF, however I do have two tattoos also (right ankle and tummy). Course, again, I dont have NF, but havent had any trouble.
