FAQs

Your questions about NF Walk answered:

What is NF Walk?

NF Walk is a national program in which communities rally around individuals and families affected by NF. NF Walks are non-competitive, relaxed, celebratory events designed to champion the individuals who live every day with the challenges of neurofibromatosis (NF).

Where are NF Walks held?

Walks are held across the United States, and there are different types of walks each organizer can host. A majority of the NF Walks are held in parks while others are held in schools, virtually, or at lunch (which is most popular among corporations). Generally, walks are held in central and accessible locations where a community normally congregates, but the location will depend on which type of walk you are hosting.

There is not an NF Walk near me. Can I still participate?

Yes! You can walk anywhere through our NF Walk Everywhere program. You pick the day and the place, and we’ll give you the tools to register. All you have to do next is invite your friends, and fundraise! NF Walk Everywhere is a versatile way to improve the lives of those living with neurofibromatosis (NF).

How long is the walk route?

The length of the walk route is determined by the walk organizers and the size of the venue. Typically walks are an average of 3 miles.

Is there a deadline to register for an NF Walk?

Yes, all walks have an online registration deadline, which is typically the Thursday before the event. We prefer you sign up online to participate in a walk to ensure organizers have enough food, T-shirts, and staff to accommodate the number of participants; however, if you miss the deadline, you may also register onsite the day of the walk. If you are registering onsite, please contact the walk organizer beforehand.

Do I have to be a member of a team to participate in NF Walk?

Many people find being part of a team one of the best parts of NF Walk! Whether there are 20 or 200 participants at your walk, each one is modeled as a non-competitive, relaxing event where family and friends gather to champion our mission. Although it is not required, we strongly encourage individuals to form a team because they're great in reinforcing a positive sentiment and sense of collaboration among the participants. There are teams as small as two people and some as large as 20. Team members can participate as a walker or a volunteer. If you are unable to start a team, feel free to join an existing team of your choice on the event page.

How do I register online?

View upcoming events at the top of this page. Choose an event and you will be directed to an online registration and fundraising website. Choose an option under Register Today and you will be guided through the registration process. Once your transaction is complete, you will receive a confirmation email receipt.

What is a team captain?

A team captain is the lead coordinator and motivator for the NF Walk Team. The primary responsibility of the team captain is to recruit people to join their walk team, name their team, set a team fundraising goal, and consistently encourage, motivate and communicate with team members before, during and after and the walk.Team captains are the Children's Tumor Foundation's main contact with participants. They communicate directly with the Children's Tumor Foundation walk team and receive ongoing information, guides and ideas during the months before the walk. Each walk team must have a team captain.

How many members should be on my team?

Team captains should have a goal to recruit 5-10 people or more for their team. However, there is no minimum requirement, and we encourage teams of any size to participate.

What is a fundraising goal and how much should it be?

A fundraising goal is the amount you think your team can raise. We ask that each person raise a minimum of $100. So if a team has 5 people, that would be a goal of $500, and with 10, $1,000. Of course, we encourage people to raise as much as they can, so if you feel your team can make more than that, by all means set a higher goal! Let your team members know what the goal is and plan ways to reach it. Your team members can donate to your page, or they can host events to help out the team. Every dollar raised goes a long way!

Does my registration fee go towards my fundraising?

Yes. Your registration fee for signing up for NF Walk is the first donation that goes towards your fundraising totals.

How do I collect donations?

Each NF Walk participant will receive a personal fundraising web page to collect donations from friends and family. You can also host offline fundraising events and send the money raised to our office (checks or money orders only; do not send cash through the mail). See below for more info on sending checks.

If someone wants to write a check, where can I send it?

If someone writes you a check, or you host an offline fundraising event, make the check out to Children’s Tumor Foundation and send it to:
Children’s Tumor Foundation
Attn: NF Walk "City and/or State"
120 Wall St., 16th Floor
New York, NY 10005

Make sure there is a note inside the envelope that says where the donation should be credited to. Or you can write your name or team name on the memo line of the check.

When I send in a check, how long does it take to get uploaded to my page?

It usually takes 10 days for a check to be uploaded to your website, once we receive it in the office.

Are donations people make to my page tax deductible?

Online donations via fundraising pages will receive an automatic confirmation that serves as a tax deductible letter. If a donor misplaces the email, please contact us at nfwalk@ctf.org and we can resend the confirmation. For donations received through the mail, Children's Tumor Foundation will send a thank you letter acknowledging the gift with all necessary information for a tax deduction when they file their taxes.

How much of my donation goes back to fund the mission?

82% of what the Foundation raises is invested in NF research and programs.
