NFE Athlete Spotlight: Sasha Drebskaya

By February 20, 2020February 6th, 2024NF Endurance, NF1, Story of NF, Ways to Give

Sasha is running her first “big” race, the 2020 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon, with the NF Endurance team next month. While she has NF herself, she’s doing this for her kids, all three of whom also have neurofibromatosis. She paused her training to answer a few questions for us.

Children’s Tumor Foundation: Why did you join the NF Endurance team?
Sasha: For my three beautiful NF warriors.

What keeps you going during the toughest moments?
My children. My three NF warriors. There are days that I feel helpless with all the challenges that come across. I also feel scared. All. The. Time. Scared of unknown, of things I cannot control. But when I run… I feel like I can control THIS. This very moment. I feel like, I got it. I am strong enough to keep fighting and won’t give up.

What is your favorite part of this event?
Every mile is proving to myself that I am capable of more than I ever thought was possible.

What is the preparation like?
Challenging. But also very exciting. I was never a “runner.” I started jogging in June of 2019. I still remember the day, when I was able to actually RUN my first mile. It seemed like such huge accomplishment for me. Then I ran my first 4-mile race at Central Park in November, and now THIS. I cannot begin to tell you HOW excited I am for the race. Last year, my family and I were among volunteers, and I could only dream, that one day, I will be running it too.

How does it feel knowing you raised money for CTF and NF research?
I feel happy to be able to raise money and bring awareness. I have met many medical professionals who never even heard of NF. To be able to educate, one person at a time, gives me purpose.

Do you have any advice for other NF Endurance athletes?
When you can’t run anymore, run with your heart.

What is your favorite song to train to?
Rachel Platten – Fight Song
