Propose a Biomarker that Could Predict Potential for Plexiform Neurofibroma Growth

The Neurofibromatosis Therapeutic Accelerations Program (NTAP) has issued a challenge seeking creative ways to identify which plexiform neurofibromas (pNF) are most likely to grow to substantial size, before they have actually grown. Successful submissions will be awarded up to $10,000.

Plexiform neurofibromas are a common manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). NF1 is a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. Plexiform neurofibromas are histologically benign but many grow to substantial volume over time, thereby displacing nearby structures and causing both significant neurological symptoms and disfigurement. Some pNFs undergo malignant conversion, becoming sarcomas that are often fatal.

NTAP was established to fast-track the development of effective treatments for plexiform neurofibromas. NTAP supports efforts that bridge the gap between early research discoveries and the clinic, ensuring people with plexiform neurofibromas can benefit from research advances as quickly as possible.
