Orangeburg, NY—Tappan Zee High School is set to host the third annual “Two Counties, One Cause”  basketball tournament, a fundraiser to support the Children’s Tumor Foundation on Friday, Jan. 11 and Saturday, Jan.12, 2019. The tournament, which featured six teams in the inaugural event, has grown to a field of 10 this year, comprised of five teams from Westchester County and five from Rockland County. Also playing for the first time is the Tappan Zee girls varsity basketball team, taking on Sleepy Hollow on Friday night.

All monies raised will be contributed to the Children’s Tumor Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to driving research, expanding knowledge, and advancing care for neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. It affects one in every 3,000 births.

Tappan Zee head basketball coach George Gaine, now in his 16th year at the helm of the Dutchmen basketball program, is the driving force behind the tournament.

“It is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. It’s important to remove the mystery of illness with understanding and that’s why raising awareness is so critical,” said Coach Gaine. “Every penny raised goes to the Children’s Tumor Foundation to aid in research to find a cure. I cannot express my gratitude to the teams that are participating. It is a big deal to give up a home game and yet all the coaches do so willingly.”

Additionally, fleece blankets will be collected for distribution to the homeless by the Tappan Zee basketball teams. They will accompany the Blauvelt Leos on a midnight run. The first two years of Two Counties, One Cause, teddy bears were collected and sent to local children’s hospitals and to Angels Without Borders where they were given to children separated from their parents at the border.

The boy’s tournament tips at noon with Nyack facing Croton, followed by Ramapo and Yorktown at 2pm’ Pearl River plays Hendrick Hudson at 4pm, and Albertus Magnus and Mamaroneck  tip off at 6pm. The slate concludes with Tappan Zee squaring off against Ossining at 8pm.

Bailey’s Smokehouse is sponsoring a half court shot with the chance to win $1,000 and it will take place at the half of the Tappan Zee game.
